Kitschy Cottage Style - Creating a Fresh Vintage Look

If you are looking for a new twist on vintage style, then perhaps a "kitschy cottage look" is a perfect match for you. Many of the kitchen and home accessories produced during the 1950s were made in "cottage colors" such as soft yellows, greens, pinks, blues, peach and aqua, and were patterned with tropical prints and beach novelty images. There are plenty of kitchen, bath, bedroom and patio collectibles out there and still priced well.

The good news is that you don't have to live near the water to create cottage style. All you need is the desire to have some fun and experiment with fabrics, flea market finds and furnishings. Cottage style is all about achieving a comfortable, relaxed, laid back home.

One of the best ways to get acquainted with what to hunt for is to read through some old home magazines. My favorite source for 1950s kitchen and home products is vintage Family Circle Magazines. These periodicals are easy to find in stores and online for a few dollars. You can usually buy them individually or in lots.

When you browse through these magazines you'll see full-page advertisements of some of your favorite collectibles such as Pyrex, tablecloths, aprons, mixing bowls etc.

As you read through these fifties' women's magazines you will recognize many household names of manufacturers you probably grew up with. Popular producers of today's "kitschy collectibles" are: Fire King, Gay Fad, Corning Glass Works, Lincoln Beautyware, Blisscraft of Hollywood, Burroughs and Dapol Plastics, Federal Glass and Lustro Ware.

In 1951, Corning Glassworks advertised oven and refrigerator sets for $2.95 that came in primary, pastel and desert colors. Homemakers (politically correct term in 1950) adored these dishes because they saved time. You could cook in them and then easily store the left-overs. Today Pyrex is once again very popular because it works well during the summer months and in warmer climates.

Pyrex is not the only kitchen collectible cottage style homeowners are after. Retro Canisters sets are also a nice addition to a kitschy cottage home because they are decorative and practical.

Not only can you accessorize your kitchen with collectibles, but there are many other forties and fifties treasures that look terrific in other rooms as well. Barkcloth pillows and draperies, Chenille bedspreads, white or pastel painted furniture, enamel top cottage tables, ceramic planters, lemonade sets, vintage garden accessories and wicker are great options when your goal is a comfy cottage feel.

Salvaged vintage items, like the collectibles just mentioned, are very popular today. It is amazing to watch prices climb for what was once junkyard clutter. Chipped and painted furniture is a hot trend, along with old windows, shutters and doors. With a little imagination you can use these salvage objects in new ways.

If you enjoy re-painting older furniture, there are plenty of resource books out there to help you with specific painting and restoration techniques.

How to Find the Cookware Set That Will Work For You

Cookware sets are among the basics in any chef's kitchen tools. When you look to buy skillets, saucepans, and Dutch ovens, you will find that they often come in convenient sets. The trick is to choose sets that have all the pots and pans you want.

First, look at the base material of the set. Even heating is the name of the game with aluminum core saucepans and skillets. Some pans have a T-fal Ultra-base to provide the same quality. The basic copper-clad stainless steel cookware that was so popular in the past distributes the heat well too. However, the copper bottoms are prone to tarnishing.

Next, consider the materials of the handles and lids. Glass lids are great because you can peek in without lifting the lid. Sometimes it lengthens cooking time or damages the quality of the food when you let that steam escape. Other types of lids can work, providing they are tight-fitting.

Handles should be ergonomically designed so that they fit your hand nicely when you are spending long hours in the kitchen. They should be made of durable materials like stainless steel, silicone, or bakelite. It is important to find handles that are also naturally cool to the touch when you use the cookware.

The assortment is something to think about when you are selecting your cookware. You might want a very large set with several different sizes of sauce pans and skillets or a smaller set with only one of each. You may just want one item of cookware, like a large stockpot that can serve multiple functions in the kitchen.

Some of the popular sauce pans are 1, 2, and 3 quart sizes. Certain companies also make a convenient 1 and 1/2 quart size. Saute pans, or skillets, come in sizes of 8, 9.5, 10.25, or 11 inches. There are even large cookers that resemble big skillets in a 5 quart size. Dutch ovens are usually available in 4, 5, or 6 quart varieties. When you are choosing your cookware set, think about whether you would like larger or smaller pans, or a variety.
Then, of course, there are the special features. Many cookware sets have some sort of non-stick coating. Some cooks consider this almost a necessity now. Other sets have extras like nylon utensils, measuring cups, and measuring spoons. Look for Dutch ovens with steamer baskets, as these come in very handy when making steamed vegetables.

You home is never quite complete without good cookware for your kitchen. You can find cookware sets and individual pieces that will suit just about any taste. Do not be afraid to shop around for awhile before you buy. You will be living with your cookware for a long time, so it makes sense to choose carefully.

Kitchen Renovations - From Cabinets to Countertops

Setting your goals

This may be somewhat of a time waster for some people, but it actually will save you a lot of time and energy as you go through your kitchen renovation. If you have a purpose in mind, say, you want to entertain a small group of friends in it regularly, or you want it to be the hub of activity because you're always host to reunions and large parties, this has to be set and the design built around it.

For instance, if you're expecting a lot of use for the kitchen you're envisioning, then you might want to replace your existing formica or old tile countertop with a stylish and durable granite countertop. Granite kitchen countertops are the in things these days, and they are highly favored because of the elegance they exude and the durability you can depend on.

What to plan for prior to a renovation

Given this opportunity to fix your kitchen up as if starting from base one, you need to write out your plan on paper. Don't just rely on describing arrangements and details with the contractor, as there may be many things lost in translation.

You don't have to be an artist to make a rough sketch of the look you want to have. However, if you feel inadequate, then you can always use plug-and-play interior design programs which help you visualize and render your ideas in 2D, or sometimes even in 3D, as there are software which make it possible for you to 'walk through' your blueprint.

A kitchen renovation involves not just the kitchen cabinetry but also the appliances, the fixtures, and the kitchen countertop. Perhaps the most difficult to work on is the kitchen countertop. Rarely can one do this as a DIY project because of the difficulty of installing the countertop.

If you choose a granite construction materials, for example, you have to think twice befor asking a friend to help you out and tackling it as a wekkend project. To install one, you first need to take care of the installation of the cabinets, as you would need a template on which to base the kitchen countertop's measurements.

Taking measurements

This is a job for you to do if you want to estimate the amount you'll spend on new materials. It will be rather tough meeting the budget if you don't have a rough estimate of how many materials you'd require.

You might even get around to taking measurements for the countertop, but usually, the contractors would opt to take the measurements themselves. This is because all measurements for renovations have to be accurate to within fractions of an inch. Otherwise, costly repeat jobs would eat away at your budget.

Increase Productivity With Better Office Design

An open floor plan, natural light, movable furniture, informal meeting rooms and roomier office space will allow increase productivity and a better bottom line. Switching to a better office design enables employees to work better together and it maximizes the use of office space. Break free from cubicle design, use eco-friendly office designs and identify existing problems to increase communication and maximize office space. Better office design will not only lead to better employee communication and output, but it also allows you to make a great first impression on other business associates and clients.

Break Free from Cubicle Design

A recent trend is to have everyone working in an open floor plan model. This means doing away with window offices for managers and cubicle offices for other employees. Upper management is seated in a large room and shares their space with every other employee in the company. This allows for open communication between employees and their managers. It is just one way to improve communication in the workplace. Remove cubicles and take down the barriers that prevent employees from open communication. Base your new office design on functionality, ease of use, purpose of office space and a mobile work style model. Create small hubs where employees can gather and discuss ideas.

Eco-Friendly Office Design

Another recent trend is for companies to go green. Saving the environment is an important topic that both large and small companies must address. Regardless of the size of your business, you can make a difference by conserving energy, maximizing natural light in your office space, using recycled materials and recycling, creating a healthier workplace environment and purchasing eco-friendly office equipment. Ecoply is just one example of the materials are used today to make office furniture that is sturdy and useful, but also breaks down in landfills more easily than traditional materials.

Identify Existing Problems before Redesigning the Office Space

It is absolutely necessary to identify the existing problems that exist with your office space before you come up with a new office design floor plan. You must first come up with solutions to incorporate when the office space is redesign. This is your chance to iron out all the bugs, get rid of pet peeves with an office space and increase productivity.

Lack of communication and relying on e-mail too much our problems that commonly affect workers in a traditionally designed office space. This is something that needs be considered before you enter the redesign and construction phase. Also consider upgrading your computers and technology first. Once you do this you'll notice that you need smaller office furniture and can create more office space.

What Can a Better Office Design Accomplish?

Maybe you are on the fence about whether to even change your office design. Why mess with perfectly good office space and furniture that could last a few more years? It may be standing on all four legs, but is it really doing its job? Outdated office furniture limits office space and productivity. New office furniture is designed with function and space in mind. You can maximize both by updating old pieces. Consider the benefits the company and the employees would receive from by improving the office space:

• Better morale

• Higher motivation

• Increased creativity

• Increase productivity

• Improved communication

• More revenue

• Better teamwork

• Fewer pet peeve's and irritations

• Better comfort

• More attractive work space

• Better first impression of the business on business associates and potential clients

Also consider that the improvements in office design that your employees will benefit from are the same things that will impress outsiders. Business associates and visitors will feel the healthier environment and will also benefit from improved communications. Clients will also feel more comfortable doing business with your company if they enter a happier environment that runs smoothly. It stands to reason that you will not only improve the morale of your employees, but you will also improve your relationships with other business associates and clients. What does this mean for business owners? A better office design and an open floor plan can actually increase your revenue and help build your business.

Modern House Framing and the Pythagorean Theorem

The relationship between carpentry and the Pythagorean Theorem is believed to be around 4,000 years old. The modern house framing industry would not be possible without the use of this theorem. It is applied in nearly all aspects of home building. Some examples would be roof framing, squaring foundations, and walls to name just a few.

The Pythagorean Theorem is believed to have originated around 2,000 B.C. The ancient Egyptians needed a way to lay out square corners for their fields. The way this was accomplished is amazingly simple yet very effective. They used three stakes arranged in a triangle and a length of rope knotted into twelve equal lengths. They would then stretch the rope around the three stakes until they had three knots between the first two stakes, four knots between the next two stakes, and five knots between the last two stakes. Thus the hypotenuse of the right triangle was formed.

A Greek philosopher and mathematician, born around 530 B.C., named Pythagoras became famous for formulating the Pythagorean Theorem. Even though the historians have given him credit, it was certainly known much earlier.

When referring to a right triangle, one angle equals 90 degrees, the hypotenuse is on the opposite side and equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. The formula for the theorem is a squared + b squared = c squared with c being the hypotenuse. When building houses, since two sides are usually known, this method is extremely accurate when squaring footings and foundation walls.

In conventional house framing, roof framing is one of the more complex issues carpenters are faced with. With the use of a framing square and a working knowledge of the Pythagorean Theorem, roof framing is more accurate and efficient. The design of the framing square is based on this principal of mathematics. On the rafter tables and brace measurement portion of the square, these numbers are generated using the Pythagorean Theorem.

When the theorem is used in conjunction with computer software to generate foundation, floor, wall, and roof framing plans, it will increase quality, productivity, and decrease waste. If quality and productivity are increased and waste reduced, it can only lead to one outcome, higher quality finished homes, an increased profit margin, and higher customer satisfaction. This is a definite win win situation for the builder and homeowner alike.

The author of this article has 29 years of experience working in the highly competitive housing market of the west and southwest suburbs of Chicago as a carpenter. His job titles have included Master Roof Cutter, Apprentice, and everything in between. Most of his experience is in the high end custom home marketplace, including all aspects of fine homebuilding, from footings to ridge cap. His website contains more information on House Framing and the Pythagorean Theorem.

Kitchen Design Plans, Tips On Small Kitchen Designs

The kitchen is often the focal point of any house, as well as a place for cooking and eating it is often a meeting place where the whole family gather. Therefore it is important to have a kitchen that is both functional and pleasant to be in. If you thought that it was too difficult to design your own kitchen, then think again. There are many different kitchen design plans and with a few tips you can have the kitchen that you have always wanted.

Small Kitchen Designs:

If you have a small room for a kitchen it may at first seem to be very difficult when you want to design your own kitchen to your personal preferences. But remember that a functional kitchen does not rely just on the kitchen floor design, where everything has to fit into tight corners to make the most of the available space.

One simple but effective idea is to put an island in or near the centre of the room. These provide great storage as well a convenient and handy workspace. Kitchen island designs automatically create more space, as they are usually placed in the centre of the kitchen it also gives you easy access all the way around.

With a little thought you could even incorporate something like a breakfast bar as part of your kitchen island design. And don’t forget that you are not just limited to a square or rectangle for your kitchen island, it could be round or oval or any shape that will fit into your kitchen floor design.

As well as the actual design there are also many kitchen appliances available these days that come in smaller sizes, especially designed for the smaller kitchen. Things like refrigerators are available that are only twenty four inches deep as apposed to the usual thirty inch deep models. And don’t forget things like microwave ovens that will fit easily onto a worktop below overhead cabinets.

Also think about hanging your pots and pans on a rack over your kitchen island. This not only makes them more accessible and easier to get at when needed but will also drastically cut down on the amount of cupboard space that they take up. And its not just pots and pans that can be hung on racks, you can also hang up things like cooking utensils, oven gloves, and anything else that you use often. This way you don’t have to go searching through cluttered drawers just to find one item.

Lighting is another important part of the décor to think about when you design your own kitchen. With the proper kind of lighting it can create the illusion of a bigger room. There are lots of different types of lighting available these days, so you no longer have to put up with a fluorescent strip light or glaring 100 watt bulbs. The simple use of dimmer switches can give you a greater flexibility for different lighting moods.

These are just some of the basic tips for small kitchen designs. When you come to design your own kitchen make sure you think it through properly so you get exactly what you want. Whether you want an old world kitchen design, or if you are after a great island kitchen design, remember that its your kitchen so its worth getting it right, as its you who will be using it.

Stainless Kitchen Carts - A Strong Ally In A Modern Kitchen

When it comes to creating a contemporary and modern look in the kitchen many people think they have to sacrifice functionality and convenience to capture that modern style. With all those sleek and crisp lines of chrome and steel that define the modern look, what kinds of kitchen furniture are readily available? Stainless kitchen carts.

While you may have only seen them at play in restaurants, stainless kitchen carts can also be a great help in your own kitchen. First, they fit in perfectly with the contemporary and modern look. They have sharp lines and are in that shiny silver metal. Gone are the days of white appliances, but in are the days of industrial steel appliances, something stainless kitchen carts will fit right in with.

In addition to having that sharp contemporary look, stainless kitchen carts will also offer an industrial and professional look in your kitchen. They will bring up images of items being prepared for a meal in a fancy dining environment. One look at this cooking space and people will think the person who is doing the cooking in here means business.

While looks are a lot when it comes to picking the right piece of kitchen furniture, stainless kitchen carts also have a number of functions to serve in your kitchen.

If you do a lot of entertaining the stainless kitchen carts are going to save you a lot of abuse to your feet and the loss of precious time. Instead of constantly running back and forth to the kitchen to grab one item after the next, you can load the cart up and roll the whole deal out in one shot, ready to serve everyone. This not only saves you the repetition of going in and out of the kitchen over and over again, but it also gives you a lot more time to socialize with your guests and enjoy more time with them, and less time in your kitchen. You invited people over to spend time with them, enjoy as much of it as you can.

Many people also favor stainless kitchen carts over any other material, because of the ease of cleaning and maintenance. Some of the ornate carts on the market have too many cracks and crevices where food items can get stuck. Additionally many of these kitchen carts are made with metal accents that will rust over time from having liquids spilled on them. Not so with stainless kitchen carts. You can give stainless kitchen carts all the abuse your counters and cutting boards get and the most you will have to do is wipe down the surface. You don’t have to worry about them rusting or getting weak on you.

When it comes to special dinners, we all like to think we will be serving up a magnificent meal without any snags or spills. But, the reality is that you will have to deal with splashes and spills and it is much better to do this with stainless kitchen carts that will take that licking and keep on rolling, than with carts that can’t handle the heat in your kitchen.

Kitchen Interior Design-how To Choose A New Kitchen Sink On A Budget

Your kitchen sink is crucial to the overall layout of your kitchen. The rest of your kitchen can be designed exactly the way you want it, but if your sink doesn’t match the overall theme, it just won’t fly. Should you decide to purchase a new sink, here are some tips on how to pick out the right one.

First of all, before you even begin redesigning your kitchen, set a budget and stick with it. There is nothing worse than getting to the middle of your kitchen redesign project and realizing you won’t have the funds to complete the job.

You need to shop around at all your local home improvement stores to find the right sink at an affordable price. Be careful during this process-even thought you may find the perfect kitchen sink right off the bat, if it is out of your price range, don’t even consider it.

Also, another great source for finding the perfect kitchen sink is the internet. Quite simply, you can find a lot of great deals on the internet that you simply won’t find offline. Be patient as you shop around, compare prices, and wait until you find the right sink within your budget.

Another very important consideration before you begin shopping around is the size of the sink you need. Attempting to install a sink that is too large for your kitchen can be disastrous. Again, it is extremely important that you determine this before you begin shopping.

You will also need to determine the style of sink you want. The two popular options are one and two basin sinks. The majority of sinks come with two basins, but there are some available with only one. If you do not have a dishwasher, for instance, it is crucial that you get a two basin sink for doing your dishes by hand.

However, if you do have a dishwasher, you may find that one basin sinks are more stylish and trendy. Therefore, this decision is based on largely on your kitchen’s overall design and needs.

Another very important consideration is the color of your sink. You absolutely need to make sure that this matches the rest of your kitchens interior, or else you won’t get the affect you are looking for.

While the kitchen sink may seem like a minor consideration compared to the cabinets, counter tops, or the walls, it still is a big contributor to the overall atmosphere of the kitchen. Don’t take this decision lightly-it could determine the overall success of your kitchen redesigning process.

These are just a few simple yet very effective tips to help you choose the right kitchen sink at an affordable price. Remember, there are always going to be more sinks to choose from. Don’t fall in love with the first one you see. You may find, after just a little time spent searching, that you can find a very similar sink at a much better price.

Again, determine the type of kitchen interior design you want, find the sink that will match that, and then make sure the price is right. Follow these guidelines, and watch your kitchen blossom before your eyes.

Kitchen Planning – Basic Tips To Improve Your Kitchen Area

The kitchen is often the busiest room in the house and has a variety of functions. While food preparation is its most obvious, the kitchen is often the social hub of the family home, playing host to a number of activities such as homework and dining. Decorating or furnishing any room requires careful planning to achieve the best results and this is especially true of the kitchen. From the outset, it is important to decide what you want from your kitchen area. If you’re going to use it primarily for cooking, then a large amount of work-surface will be needed. Or if meals are to be eaten there, room and space are going to be important considerations.

The removal of laundry appliances is worth considering for those looking to free up space. They could be placed in another room in the house or even put outside; A shed or out-house could be transformed into a utility room to store large laundry appliances such as washing machines or dryers. Other kitchen appliances such as freezers could also be moved, thereby providing extra space for smaller kitchen areas. This could enable you to provide an extra piece of kitchen furniture such as a small table or chair.

The preparation of food is often a time consuming activity. Therefore the kitchen worktop should be tailor-made for its user. The incorrect height can encourage bad posture, which in turn can lead to back-problems. It should be flexible in design, especially if a kitchen is used by more than one person. Features such as roll out worktops can help achieve this requirement. They can also be installed at varying heights to adapt to different users. Adjustable stools might also be worth considering.

Good lighting can help aid in the smooth and efficient running of a kitchen. Like the bathroom, it can have reflective surfaces that cause glare. So a lighting set-up that provides effective illumination for every-day tasks as well as soft background lighting is a practical necessity. Low-voltage bulbs concealed by a partition are good at this, as are cooker hoods. Most hoods come with an integral light that can help provide a useful background glow for cooking and preparation. And, if you plan on using your kitchen for dining, an adjustable rise and fall lamp installed over the table can offer a pleasant, relaxing ambience.

You should also plan where you’ll put your electrical kitchen accessories. The placement of electrical sockets is important in terms of safety and practicality and so a good number should be installed. Trailing electrical flexes are not a good idea and can prove very dangerous. Therefore at least two sockets should be installed for each worktop.

Ventilation is another integral feature. It helps maintain an odour-free environment as well as preventing the build-up of moisture caused by steam. Extractor fans are effective at this and are sometimes included with oven systems. Installing an oven/ cooker next to an exterior wall means that its extractor fan can vent stale air out of the kitchen immediately. Condensation is therefore drastically reduced and good air circulation created. In a room that can emit strong odours, this is an essential factor.

The three most important features of a kitchen are the fridge, sink and cooker. For ease of use and convenience they should be close together. Placing them at the points of an imaginary triangle is a popular practice and can help prevent excessive movement around the kitchen. This can, however be influenced by the shape and size of your kitchen. So in some cases the logical solution is to place them in a line. Square kitchens provide the most scope for layout possibilities. U-shape and L-shape designs are the most popular and can provide extra space for eating or relaxing, whatever suits you home the most.

Storage is another factor in kitchen planning. Adequate space for appliances and other kitchen equipment ensures that a cooking area is free from clutter and can run smoothly. Kitchen units are the most common and space-efficient solutions to space issues. Buying on the cheap should be avoided however. There’s nothing more annoying than drawers that don’t run smoothly, or doors that don’t close properly. Quality kitchen units will last much longer and are much more durable than their less expensive counterparts. Kitchen cupboards and dressers are also an option. They can provide extra space to store and display dishes and other items. Open shelves such as those found on traditional kitchen dressers can lend a kitchen a relaxed lived-in look, even when full and may enhance the overall look and feel of the room.

In conclusion, planning and building a new kitchen is a good investment. It can improve the quality of your life as well as increasing the value of your home. With the application of a few tried and trusted methods, and some considered purchases, you can have an efficient, attractive and practical kitchen area, which should stand the test of time.

How To Maximize Kitchen Space? | Tips To Optimize Kitchen Workspace

One key solution to maximizing kitchen space is to think beyond borders and don’t be limited by the designated dimensions of your kitchen. Not everything that’s traditionally found in the kitchen necessarily needs to be there. Much of your crockery, utensils, appliances and accessories can be stored in neighboring areas to free up precious kitchen space. For example, turn sideboards near the dining table into accessible storage spaces for cutlery, serving crockery and entertaining accessories such as napkin holders.

Another suggestion is to make use of surface space such as the counter top. One good idea is to install a pull-out table on wheels which allows it to multi-task as an extra preparation table or breakfast bar, and can be tucked away when not needed.

Other than countertops, consider mounting appliances such as microwave ovens on the wall. They can sit on open shelves, or be hidden behind cabinet doors for a clean, uniform look, chopping boards that fit over sinks or the flat surface of an electric hob (when not in use) can also double as a preparation space.

Walls, cabinet doors and sides of cupboards can be surprisingly useful as storage areas. Instead of trying to cram yet another utensil into your overflowing drawer, install rails or hooks on the wall or under cupboards. Hanging up your cooking implements not only makes grabbing them a cinch (no more rummaging at the back of the bottom drawer), they can also inject visual interest on otherwise plain walls.

For high ceilings, a custom-made rail for hanging wine glasses or mugs can make a stunning mid-air attraction, and save you considerable storage space. You must not forget the external sides of cabinets or the inside of pantry doors; these are perfect for hanging oven mitts, dish cloths and light gadgets.

Keep in mind that kitchen cabinet accessories can also help maximize space:

1. Rotating carousel units; perfect for corner cabinets. They swing items out of spaces that are hard to reach.

2. Slide-out trays and pull-out baskets; a tug lets you see everything in your pantry and makes things easy to find.

Kitchen Design – Understanding The Work Triangle And Kitchen Layouts

Having a good layout for your kitchen is important, because the kitchen should be an efficient and pleasant area in which to prepare meals and do related tasks. Understanding the kitchen work triangle concept and the basic kitchen layouts is a valuable starting point for having a good kitchen design that you like.

The kitchen work triangle consists of the distance between the sink, refrigerator and range or cooktop. Each one of these areas becomes a focal point in the kitchen and forms the three points of a triangle with different distances between them. Done correctly, the kitchen work triangle provides the most efficient food preparation area layout in the kitchen.

Whether you’re remodeling an existing kitchen or building a new one, an efficient design means that your work triangle minimizes the number of steps the cook must take between the three areas during meal preparation and cleanup. The total distance from the sink to the stove to the refrigerator and back to the sink should be not less than 12 feet total nor more than 27 feet. Each triangle leg should measure between 4 and 9 feet in length. The kitchen isles should be at least 42 to 48 inches wide to allow people to move around easily and for appliances to be opened with ease.

When selecting the floor plan for your kitchen, here are basic kitchen layouts to consider:

* L-Shaped Kitchen - this is the most popular kitchen design. It consists of a long leg and a shorter one and this type of design can be used in small and large kitchens. The L-shaped kitchen gives you the possibility of having a center island depending on the space available. In general, this design will have 2 or 3 appliances on one wall. The usual arrangement is to have the refrigerator at one end, the range or cooktop at the other end with the sink located in the middle. This shape of kitchen generally provides good traffic flow.

* Double L-Shaped Kitchen - this kitchen design has a lot of cabinet space and plenty of counter space. This design is used in large kitchens with two cooks, and it has two or more entering areas, which can cause traffic flow problems. To avoid some of these problems, create two separate working areas on each L of the kitchen so that workflow does not get interrupted by human traffic.

* U-Shaped Kitchen - this kitchen design shape has three walls instead of two, and the sink usually is located in the middle wall section. The refrigerator and range or cooktop are usually on the side walls opposite each other. The U-shaped kitchen design gives room for ample countertop space, and you have three walls for cabinets and appliances. This kitchen layout tends to create a working triangle that is very efficient.

The only problem with this type of kitchen design is that sometimes the two U corners are not used appropriately. Make sure you buy the appropriate storage items for the corner cabinets created by the U shape design. The U shape design can also create dark kitchens because of the shape and the amount of cabinets. Using skylights, large windows, lots of under-cabinet task lighting and light colors will help keep the kitchen bright with sufficient light to see what you’re doing.

* G-Shaped Kitchen - this type of kitchen shape is becoming very popular, and it gives you a fourth wall to use. The G-shape can be used if you have more than one cook in the house. This fourth wall section can be used for a counter, island and storage space. With this kitchen layout you can have two sinks, perhaps two cooktops or two ranges. You could have two working triangles - one for sink, cook top or range and refrigerator and a second working triangle with another sink, built-in grill and cooktop. It allows two cooks to do different things at the same time and entertain large groups of people.

* Single-Wall Kitchen - if you do not have much space, you may only be able to have an I-shaped kitchen. No problem. Just be sure the sink is placed between the refrigerator and the stove. Locate the refrigerator so that the refrigerator door opens away from the kitchen sink. This is a very common arrangement for small kitchens in narrow spaces.

* Galley-Shaped Kitchen - this type of kitchen design is more common in apartments or in homes where space is limited -- it is often called the corridor style. The kitchen cabinets and the appliances can be located on opposite walls for better work flow - place the range or cooktop on one side of the kitchen along one wall and the refrigerator and sink on the opposite wall.

To eliminate traffic issues in this type of kitchen design, one entry is often closed off. This type of layout should only be used by one cook. If you want to maintain both exits, place the refrigerator near the end of the galley kitchen for easy access - this way, your family and friends can reach the refrigerator without interfering with the person who is cooking. If you need extra storage in the galley kitchen, install tall kitchen cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. Wall storage is crucial - buy a stepladder to use when you need to reach the upper shelf of the cabinets, and place the items you use less frequently on the upper shelves.

By understanding the kitchen work triangle concept and how you want your kitchen to function, you’ll be more likely to create the kind of kitchen you’ve always wanted. Today, kitchens are often viewed as the hub of the home as well as a social center for family and friends. Planning your kitchen can be a challenge, but the rewards you’ll receive are very much worth the time and effort.

I can blend the milk for ice-creams in the food processor and make ice creams of different flavors for my daughter at home. Once there was a gathering in my house. It was my husband’s birthday. We were expecting about 40-50 friends. I finished up making fresh juice for our guests in 15-20 minutes. From cutting the salads to kneading the flour, everything was done in my food processor within no time. I ended up with the cooking before our guests’ came. Kitchen Tables And Chair Sets – Fill Your Kitchen With Country Charm

In creating a perfect rustic home, many start with the kitchen. After all, what is more rustic, and country, than a home cooked meal with the family.

These days, more and more families are enjoying meals at kitchen tables and chair sets instead of a formal dining room. Dining rooms are a lot of hassle, and are now used more for special occasions when a larger number of people need to be seated. This change is a great thing for the cook, because instead of being left out of all the conversations, while being stuck in the kitchen preparing the vittles, the family can be in the kitchen as the meal is being prepared and can all share this time together. This is also a great way to remind the rest of the family to do their part in helping to set up for, and clean up after, the meal. There's no escape when they are all in the kitchen.

To get the right old country look in the kitchen, you should start with the kitchen tables and chair sets. This is going to be the centerpiece of the room. Sure, there are all the appliances, but when people walk in, their eyes are always going to go to the table and the chairs where they can take a seat. This table and chair set needs to be comfortable, yet convey the look of life on the farm. A simple wooden set can create this look. A tabletop made of oak or cherry wood, surrounded by four chairs, for the family setting. Look for hand-embroidered cloth napkins or placemats and a real wicker basket for the bread that is to accompany the meal to complete the look at mealtime.

If your family is prone to a lot of conversation at the dinner table, you may want to make those chairs a little more comfortable, by adding a couple of cushions, one on the seat, and another on the back so everyone can be focused on the conversation and not their sore backside. When first buying the kitchen tables and chair sets you also may want to think about getting ones with arm rests, so people don't feel a need to rest their arms on the table during those talks. Just make sure there is room in the kitchen for the extra space that chairs with arms will need to fit.

Another part of creating the country kitchen look is through the appliances in the room. While we can't get rid of the refrigerator, there are some home decorators that disguise the modern appliances with false cabinet fronts or curtains to remove them from the view. When it comes to stoves, there is even a trend to change out a modern stove for a wood stove that can add the right flavor and look for the decorative style. While a wood stove may seem like an interesting idea, it is also a costly one to put into place. There is major work that will have to be done to accommodate not only the stove, but also the chimney that releases the smoke as the wood burns.

Ideas For a Cheaper Kitchen Remodel

Your huge dreams for your kitchen remodel can often fall to pieces when you find out just how much those dreams can cost. You do not have to give up your dream, though, if you can find a reasonable way to cut costs and make it more affordable. You can do just that with remodel pieces.

Remodel pieces are a handy discovery in home remodeling. They are especially useful in the kitchen. They can save you a lot of money and still give you the look you desire at the same quality as more expensive options. Here is a good example of using remodel pieces: If your cabinets are in pretty good structural shape the do not tear them out and replace them with new ones. What you can do instead is simple replace the doors. If you cabinets were not custom made then you should have no issues finding r3eplacement doors at a fraction the cost that you would pay to replace the whole set of cabinets. Another great idea is instead of painting all the walls, paint one wall a deep color. The fact the other walls were not painted will be unnoticeable and if the other walls have darkened through exposure to grease or smoke that will not be noticed either by the use of a deep, rich color.

Using remodel pieces starts with some planning. You first have to decide where you can use remodel pieces. You need to decide where they will work because they may not be the best solution in every case. You want to choose to use remodeling pieces where they will look good and function the best. You do not want to sacrifice the quality of your kitchen. Use your best judgment. You do not want to use remodel pieces only to discover they do not work and end up having to spend money on a complete replacement, too. That would defeat the whole purpose of using them in the first place and that is saving money.

Doing a kitchen remodel in pieces instead of as a whole large project can save you money and time. It can also save you frustrations as it is often much easier to do than remodeling a complete area. You should find many ways to use remodeling precise in kitchen renovation project such as installing an island. Just be creative and shop around the hardware and home improvement stores for good ideas.

The essayist Clinton Maxwell is specifically passionate about things associated to best kitchen cabinets and islands for the kitchen. Through his detailed publications, he proofed his experience on subjects dealing with kitchen island designs and best kitchen cabinets.

Relocate Kitchen Activity During Remodeling

Remodeling your kitchen can be a stressful process. Having a team of strangers working on your kitchen, making loud, obnoxious noises and generally intruding on your kitchen space can get on anyone's nerves at times. And when all that is finished, you will still not be able to reclaim your kitchen immediately. According to home remodeling experts, you should give your new kitchen time to rest for a few days before you use it again. This allows the toxic paint subside, and for any plasters and cement to dry completely. As you prepare to start your kitchen remodel, here are some ways to make the experience a little easier.

Setup a Comfortable Short-term Kitchen

If you would like to keep cooking throughout the remodeling process, you will have to find a place where you can install a temporary kitchen. It will need to be large enough to hold your refrigerator and stove, along with any other small appliances you may need like a toaster, for instance. Of course, you will need to be sure that this space is well ventilated. A temporary kitchen that does not get good air flow is dangerous and may cause fires under the worst circumstances. Also, be sure that this little kitchen space has a sink and good running water supply. You might overlook it, but this is crucial to successfully preparing meals. Remember, the whole point of this temporary kitchen is to make your day a little less stressful. Hauling a giant bucket of water over to the temporary kitchen area to clean a giant mess is not pleasant.

You might be wondering what places might work as temporary kitchens around your home. Well, that would depend on the weather. If you need to, you can host a kitchen in your basement. However, if the weather is warm and dry, you could even set it up in the garden. The best place might be the garage, however, since it has plenty of shelter and electricity, with a water faucet close by.

Seal the Area to be Renovated

You must to seal off the renovated kitchen space before and during the remodeling process. This is especially true if you have kids in the house. Kids will become curious and wander into the center of the activity. To ensure that you kids are not going to wander into the dangerous, possibly toxic area and hurt themselves, seal off the kitchen. If you ask the contractor, he should be able to install some boards or any other barriers at all the entrances and exits of the renovated space. This prevents your kids from entering the room before and even after the remodeling project. Blocking the area serves another important purpose in that you ensure that the dust from the construction work does not get out and cover all of your belongings. Getting construction dust off of walls and furniture is not an appealing task.

Greg Hansward's summaries can be found on plenty of online publications linked to wall mount faucet. You can come across his observations on best kitchen faucet over at and other sources for best kitchen faucet information.
